The 9th Belt and Road Summit opens next Wednesday

Entering the next golden decade of BRI, uncovering business opportunities from emerging markets

5 September 2024

The 9th Belt and Road Summit, co-organised by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), will be held on 11 and 12 September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Themed Building a Connected, Innovative and Green Belt and Road, the Summit will gather over 80 key officials and business leaders from Belt and Road countries and regions to explore the many business opportunities, as we embark on the next golden decade of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The Belt and Road Summit is a flagship platform for Hong Kong to promote the BRI, with content closely aligned with the eight major steps President Xi Jinping announced last year to support high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

The Opening Session will feature a welcome address by Dr Peter K N Lam, Chairman of the HKTDC, opening remarks by John Lee, Chief Executive of the HKSAR. The Keynote Luncheon will feature welcome remarks by Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, opening remarks by Chen Liang, Chairman of China International Capital Corporation Limited, and a keynote speech by Dilma Rousseff, President of New Development Bank.

The 9th Belt and Road Summit opens next Wednesday

The HKTDC delegation led by Chief Executive John Lee, which visited Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam in ASEAN from 28 July to 2 August, yielded fruitful results and connections, with 55 MOUs signed. Building on the momentum, the first day’s Policy Dialogue and Business Plenary will focus on ASEAN and other markets, the second day’s Business Plenary will cover the Middle East and surrounding regions to uncover more emerging market opportunities, with the participation of Tengku Zafrul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry of Malaysia, Lim Lork Piseth, Secretary of State of Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia, Arman Kassenov, Vice-Minister of the National Economy of Kazakhstan, Khaled Fahad Alalawi, Assistant Undersecretary of Industrial Development, Ministry of Industry & Commerce of Bahrain and Khalil Hashmi, Pakistan Ambassador to China.

This year’s Summit has introduced a new Green Chapter, in line with the theme. This will feature breakout sessions on green infrastructure, innovation and finance, during which participants can explore how the Hong Kong platform can help develop green businesses.

Two new thematic breakout sessions, focusing on multi-dimensional connectivity and people-to-people exchanges, will look at driving high-quality development of the Belt and Road, while sharing experiences in economic cooperation between BRI nations and peoples.

We invite you or your representatives to attend the event.
